Open Source at 40 Dollars a Click.

Code may be Poetry, but nothing pays the bills like cash.

The ever present awesomeness of WordPress (on which this site runs) has a new link on the homepage.

It lays out the prices for sponsoring the WordPress homepage and if you’re not curious enough to click the aforementioned link, let’s just say it’s real close to 10,000 Dollar Menu items a day (but, you know, without the bloating).

AdBrite does some fancy ‘rithmetic and comes up with the stunning number of $40 per click. In a world where advertisers on Google and Overture have driven some very targeted keywords (think Asbestos Lawsuits) up to the $40 / click range, it might be interpreted as a wee bit optimistic that an untargeted text ad would be of similar value.

I did some fancy math of my own:

13,000 * 2% * $2.00 = $520

Translated this reads: 13,000 visitors a day times my guess as to the click through rate of the those visitors times my optimistic guess of how much Googleture would pay per click for terms like “Weblog”, “Blog”,”Publishing” and “RSS”.

I deeply appreciate all the work and effort that the WordPress team does every day to deliver such a great piece of software. This post it merely to point out that associating with that greatness may not be worth $19,480 dollars more a day to advertisers.
