I watched DeadPool – the Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry film, not the Marvel Comic book character last night. Among the fun to be had: seeing Jim Carrey play “Johnny Squares” and Liam Neeson play “Peter Swan”. However besting even the sight of is the most surreal car chase scene I’ve ever seen.
Dirty Harry is being chased through the streets of San Francisco (this having been filmed in 1988, it clearly was actually filmed in San Francisco and not on a Vancouver sound stage) by a miniature remote control car loaded with plastic explosives. Dirty Harry drifts around a corner, little car drifts around a corner. Dirty Harry drives down the street losing sight of the little car. Little car weaves through people’s legs on the sidewalk and launches off a crate of oranges back onto the street and into the chase. Dirty Harry goes airborne down San Francisco hills. Little Car goes airborne, pops some wheelies (no joke) and traps Dirty Harry in an alley before finally exploding and grievously injuring his partner.
If you’re quick with your remote you can even make out the license plate “ILM1623″. A little bit of Googling turns up that ILM did do the special effects for DeadPool. Strangely, it’s not listed on their site, as if somehow they are more interested in showing off the amazing computer generated visuals of their current work than the RadioShack brand special effects of 20 years ago.
